Introduction to Watercolour Painting - Zoom Workshop 23 Jan

Saturday 23 January, 10am - 1pm

The class will start with an overview of watercolour supplies and basic techniques – how much water to use, how to mix colours to achieve the right saturation and flow of your paints. We will be working with an ‘organic’ colour palette – think greens, yellows, browns, oranges to prepare you for mixing realistic, organic looking tones for your nature-oriented illustrations.

Jola will demonstrate how to approach painting various styles of leaves – from a looser style to a more detailed botanical style.

Supplies needed:

• Watercolour paper – cold pressed (textured), minimum 300gsm weight

Legion Aqua Stonehenge paper

• Round synthetic watercolour brushes in two sizes, one smaller (that’s important for this class! - size between 3 and 5), one bigger (size between 10 and 14)

• Watercolour paints, either tubes or pans

The watercolours can be purchased as a set or as separate tubes or pans.

If buying individual paints, the colours recommended for this class are:

Black, Mars black, Umber, Raw umber, Raw sienna, Cadmium yellow, Lemon Yellow, Orange, Red.

NOTE ABOUT SUPPLIES:

You can use whatever watercolour supplies you might already own! We will make it work. 😉

Make sure you use good quality WATERCOLOUR PAPER, however. This is the most important thing. In this class, we will also use the brush to get into the details of our leaves, so it is highly advised to have a bigger and a smaller brush, both with pointy ends to achieve those detail strokes.

You can also visit your local art supply store to purchase any of the recommended supplies.

You will also need:

• 2 jars for water

• A separate ceramic dish to mix colours – can be an actual painting palette, or a big kitchen plate (preferably plain white)

• A soft lead pencil

• An eraser (preferably a putty kneadable eraser)

• Kitchen paper towel

• Scrap paper for testing colours

• A working space with suitable light so you can see the paper and colours accurately

• A cup of hot tea / coffee / chocolate / wine!
